How Durable is Microcement? A Guide to Longevity

Advanced formulation, made to last.

When considering surface finishes, durability is key. Microcement, particularly X-Bond, is known not just for its seamless look, but for its strength under foot traffic and daily wear across all applications. But how does it really hold up? In this guide, we’ll unpack what makes microcement a long-lasting option, and why X-Bond goes a step further.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a blend of cement and adhesive polymers, applied by hand as a thin coating over nearly any hard surface (commonly referred to as an overlay). Originally developed as an alternative to concrete, it has since evolved into a versatile finish available in a wide range of colours and textures, suited to almost any space.

Unlike many traditional surface materials, X-Bond is flexible by design. It’s not brittle or rigid, like tiles and poured concrete. Instead, it forms a thin but robust coating that can move with minor substrate shifts, reducing the risk of cracks.

  • Bonded to the substrate: X-Bond chemically fuses to prepared surfaces for remodel without removal.

  • Applied thinly but effectively: Usually 2-3mm (depending on the application) yet incredibly strong.

  • Designed to flex: Adapts to minor structural movement.

Adhesion, Strength, and Flexibility

Microcement is ideal for both residential and commercial settings where foot traffic is constant. We’ve seen X-Bond used in:

  • Kitchen floors and hallways

  • Open-plan living spaces

  • Retail shop flooring

  • Hospitality venues e.g. hotels, restaurants, and bars

Thanks to its seamless finish, there are no grout lines or joints that can weaken or attract dirt. It’s just one continuous, hardwearing surface.

Perfect for High-Traffic Areas

While no surface is entirely immune to wear, X-Bond microcement stands up exceptionally well under pressure. It’s finished with a protective sealer that adds another layer of defence against scratches, stains, and mould. When sealed and waterproofed correctly, X-Bond Microcement is also suitable in all wet areas including fully submerged applications e.g. showers, steam rooms, pool decks, and more. Other benefits include:

  • Low-maintenance: Thanks to the seamless grout-free application and high-performance sealer, just wipe it down with a pH-neutral cleaner.

  • Re-sealing: You only need to consider re-sealing X-Bond after 10 years (depending on how much traffic) — and no need to strip or polish.

  • Patched if possible: Isolated repairs can be made if needed without redoing entire surfaces.
