Australia’s Leading Microcement: About X-Bond
At Seamless Overlays, we’re the exclusive Australian suppliers of X-Bond Microcement. Having been installed in global projects since the early ‘90s, X-Bond is the world’s original microcement.
A versatile and modern surface coating for floors, walls, and joinery — it’s not just a decorative finish, but rather a highly functional and long-lasting material.
In both residential and commercial spaces, inside or out, X-Bond Microcement offers a wide range of possibilities. In this article, we will explore what microcement is, why X-Bond was our product of choice, its uses, types, application process, and the advantages of specifying it in interior and exterior surfaces.
What is Microcement?
Microcement, also known as microconcrete or microtopping, is a cement-based coating that is hand-applied in thin 2-3mm layers to create a durable, seamless surface. It typically consists of a mixture of cement, polymers, additives, and mineral pigments, providing a high-performance finish with excellent adhesion to various substrates, including tiles, concrete, plaster, and wood.
One of the key features of microcement is its ability to be applied over existing surfaces without the need for demolition, which makes it an excellent choice for renovations.
What makes X-Bond different?
X-Bond was developed by SEMCO surface engineers at a time when nobody even knew what microcement was. Formulated as an alternative to traditional concrete surfaces, it emerged as an easier way to get the concrete look in remodel projects.
What made it so advanced — both then and now — was the additional adhesive polymers helping it form strong bonds to existing materials without de-laminating, and it’s superior flex to withstand cracking. Coupled with a tried and trusted application system that involves waterproofing and sealing, the X-Bond system is Australia’s leading microcement.
Uses of X-Bond Microcement
X-Bond Microcement is widely used in both residential and commercial projects due to its adaptability and aesthetic appeal. Some of its most common applications include:
Floors: Creates a seamless joint-free surface with high resistance to foot AND vehicle traffic.
Walls: Suitable for interior and exterior walls in multiple different texture options.
Bathrooms: Waterproof and grout-free, making it ideal for all wet area surfaces including showers.
Kitchens: Used for countertops, splashbacks, and floors due to its hygienic and resistant properties.
Furniture: A lightweight coating easily hand-applied to tables, countertops, cabinets, and other joinery elements.
Outdoor Areas: Perfect for any outdoor area, from balconies to swimming pool surrounds, thanks to its weatherproof nature (UV, rain, and extreme temperature included!).
Application Process — Is It DIY?
Overlays in general have a mixed reputation. In the case of microcement, many product manufacturers market it as a DIY solution. However, applying a hand-rendered finish requires expertise beyond just skill with a trowel.
Most importantly, issues in the existing substrate must be addressed before application, such as waterproofing and fixing any damage. Even the best product will fail if it’s installed over pre-existing damage.
X-Bond Microcement is only installed by renderers, plasterers, or concreters who’ve completed our training courses for peace of mind that your project will stand the test of time.

Adds minimal thickness or weight, allowing application over existing surfaces without structural changes.
Available in a wide range of colours and textures, including custom, match any design aesthetic.
Zero VOC content and reduces waste by eliminating the need for demolition.
X-Bond Microcement: A Versatile Range
In the X-Bond range, there are four texture options.
Our most popular and widely specified finish is X-Bond Micro. With visible trowel marks and a smoother sanded finish, it’s similar in appearance to polished concrete. It’s used across all applications.
X-Bond Blade is an option for external floor applications, featuring pronounced chatter marks for added slip resistance (on top of an already great rating!).
If you’re after a highly textured wall, X-Bond Mineral is perfect. It’s sprayed onto the wall for a stucco-inspired finish.
Finally, X-Bond Natural Concrete is customised with a mix of smooth and textured areas to mimic the appearance of a raw concrete wall. It’s also been used for bespoke joinery, too.
So; should you use microcement? The answer is a big yes! It’s an excellent choice for those looking to achieve a modern, seamless, and durable finish for floors, walls, bathrooms, and other surfaces. With great versatility, aesthetic appeal, and resistance in all conditions, X-Bond Microcement is a preferred option for Australian homeowners, architects, and interior designers.
