How Does Water-Based Concrete Stain Work?
Concrete stain is a colouring solution applied to the surface of concrete, often used to add a translucent or semi-transparent finish that brings out the unique characteristics of the concrete’s texture and appearance — while refreshing its colour. Concrete staining is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your old concrete surfaces, or to customise new slabs.
Unlike paint, which sits on top of the surface and covers it entirely, concrete stain penetrates into the concrete, bonding with the material to create a permanent colour. It’s therefore less likely to fade, chip, or peel compared to paint or other surface treatments.
Among the different types of concrete stains, water-based stains have gained popularity. They use water as a solvent and pigments that are suspended in the stain, a newer alternative to traditional acid-based concrete stains. If you want to change the colour of your concrete, it’s one of the easiest, most effective and environmentally-friendly solutions.
How Does Water-Based Concrete Stain Penetrate Concrete?
Concrete is a porous material, which means it has small pores and voids that can absorb liquids. When water-based concrete colour stains are applied, the stain penetrates into these pores, where the pigments settle and bind to the concrete. This absorption process is what makes the stain so effective, as it gives the concrete a uniform, deep colour that isn’t just on the surface but integrated into the material. With permanent UV resistance and a sealer to finish, your coloured concrete will withstand any condition inside or out — from high-traffic flooring to external walls.
The advantages of water-based concrete stains include a longer lasting finish, greater colour variety, easier application, and more environmentally friendly composition.
In addition, formulas like ours also stabilise deterioration. If you have a crumbling surface, coating it with concrete stain can extend its lifespan.
Concrete Stain Application
The process of staining concrete is relatively simple but requires some preparation to ensure a smooth, lasting finish.
The surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned before applying the stain. This often involves:
Sweeping to remove dirt and debris.
Washing with a degreaser or concrete cleaner to remove oils, grease, or previous coatings.
Etching the surface with a specific cleaning product to open up the pores of the concrete, allowing the stain to penetrate more easily.
When it comes to application, a concrete stain is sprayed using a spray gun onto a vertical or horizontal concrete surface, either internally or externally.
After the stain has dried, the concrete will need to be sealed with a protective clear coat to prevent fading and wear over time. Sealing also enhances the colour and adds a glossy or matte finish, depending on your preference.
When using Seamless Overlays Concrete Colour Stain, the finished surface should last years before it needs touch-ups (depending on the application).
