How To Get Microcement in Your Project

A FAQ on X-Bond Microcement Installation

So, you’ve read all our microcement product information including what it is, where it can be installed, and why it’s amazing.

Now you might be looking for some answers on how to actually get it in your project. From contacting installers to the quote and sample requests; this is X-Bond 101 for Australian homeowners who love microcement.

Can I install X-Bond myself?

We only sell X-Bond to trained installers. We run training sessions in Melbourne for renderers, plasterers, and concreters. If this is you, we run our microcement installation training sessions every month (excluding reduced offerings in January).

Why can’t I DIY?

The X-Bond application system is easy for someone with rendering experience. But globally, X-Bond is not supplied to anyone who hasn’t worked with similar products before in a professional setting.

We know our product is unmatched when it comes to durability and performance, but improper application is what will lead to faults down the line. This is especially important if you’re resurfacing tiles or damaged substrates. You need to be familiar with substrate preparation methods, waterproofing, and sealing to ensure correct installation of the X-Bond system from start to finish.

We’re working on developing a DIY solution though. Stay tuned…

How much will it cost to have your microcement installed?

We don’t price jobs; your installer will be responsible for the pricing. They’ll provide a unique quote for every job. Projects are priced individually based on the following factors: the area of application, the substrate, total square meters, intricacy and location. However, for an approximate idea on pricing:

  • Concrete Floors start from $200 + GST per m2 (based on minimum 50m2)

  • Plaster Walls start from $250 + GST per m2 (based on minimum 50m2)

  • If you’re looking to have X-Bond installed in a new bathroom (standard bathroom is usually 25 – 30m2) it will cost approx. $9,000 + GST (inclusive of both material supply & installation).

As mentioned above, if installing over tiles or severely damaged substrates, extra preparation is required which will increase the cost.

Where can I find a microcement installer in Australia?

We have trained X-Bond installers in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland.

How can I get quote for X-Bond Microcement installation?

To get a quote for your microcement installation, please submit a project enquiry. Once you submit an enquiry, we’ll aim to get in touch with you via email within 24 hours.

We’ll ask you to provide us with some key information, including your project dimensions, plans and drawings (or photos if you don’t have drawings yet). Our team will then handle all contact with the installers in your area. You’ll receive one or more quotes from us in approximately 5 business days.

Some states are experiencing a higher volume of requests at the moment and installers in these areas may need longer to respond. In this case, we’ll keep you updated!

Why can’t I contact an installer directly?

There’s a very high demand for X-Bond all over Australia, and we’re the exclusive suppliers. We receive between 300-500 enquiries monthly! Our sales team is able to provide the admin support 5 days a week to streamline the quote process for both clients and applicators.

This system is quicker for everybody. It enables us to help installers with small teams keep up — and will also ensure that clients don’t have to spend time chasing up quotes.

During this time, you can directly contact us with any questions about X-Bond or its installation. We’ve been distributing it around Australia for 25+ years, so there’s no better team to ask.

Will X-Bond Microcement crack when my building or substrate underneath moves?

X-Bond is a very flexible material. It was engineered to withstand cracking from natural building movement better than any other overlay. However, with any overlay system, problems with the existing substrate can cause issues if not rectified before application. If microcement is applied on top of damage, this can cause cracking — a process known as existing substrate failure.

Extreme substrate movement may also cause problems if your existing surface is very old. Your installer should take preventative measures when preparing for the X-Bond installation — including using an anti-fracture membrane.

The good news is that in the unlikely event of a crack, your microcement can be patched quickly and easily by hand.

What about delamination?

X-Bond doesn’t delaminate. This is a guarantee!

Can you send me photos of projects featuring this X-Bond shade?

We’re always happy to share photos of X-Bond projects, however it’s important to keep in mind that colours will vary on screen, especially where photographers have edited their photos.

It’s always best to choose your shade in-person by visiting our showroom where we have large samples on display. We also have X-Bond flooring, walls, joinery installed across our entire offices — including bathrooms. Ask our team to give you the your!

If you’re not based in Melbourne, or can’t make it to the showroom, we can also provide you with the location of public works featuring X-Bond in your area. There are plenty of retail, hospitality, and commercial projects around Australia.

Can you send me microcement samples?

Yes, we can provide a box of samples. Let us know what X-Bond colour and finish you’re after. It also helps to know the area of application, as we offer two different sealing options internally and externally. The samples provided to you will be accurate colour guides.

Texturally, every X-Bond surface is unique as it’s applied by hand. But don’t worry, the end result will look just like your samples or other projects of the same finish.
