Microcement Exteriors

Redefine your outdoor spaces

From outdoor flooring to facades, swimming pools and garden pathways — microcement is a long-lasting external surface where practicality and aesthetics go hand-in-hand. If you’re building, designing, or renovating an outdoor space, you’ve come to the right place for insights and inspiration.

Our X-Bond Microcement offers a range of advantages for outdoor spaces as a versatile, durable, and modern surface solution. Homeowners, designers, and contractors stand to benefit greatly from incorporating microcement into outdoor projects. Read on to find out why microcement is becoming one of the most popular external surfaces.

Microcement

[noun] mi-cro-cem-ent

A mixture of cement and adhesive polymers, forming a coating that’s hand-installed on top of almost any hard surface; known as an overlay. While it was originally created to replicate the industrial aesthetic of concrete, microcement now comes in a range of different finishes and colours for seamless application in any space.

The benefits of installing microcement outdoors

Transform your old exterior surfaces.

Microcement makes resurfacing damaged or old substrates easy. X-Bond can be applied directly on top of cracked concrete, tiles, wood and more. This is because, instead of removing the existing substrate, we stabilise it with a crack-bridging membrane. There’s no need for demolition in your next backyard renovation — you can remodel without removal to save costs and time.

A durability like no other

Our X-Bond microcement is always sealed with high-grade sealers, ensuring the final surface holds up in any weather. Additionally, when applied with our advanced waterproofing membrane, it’s perfectly suitable swimming pools, ponds, decks, and balconies. This also provides exceptional anti-fracture protection for long-lasting quality in high-traffic areas, including driveways.

High slip rating

When it comes to outdoor flooring, the X-Bond Blade finish has a very high slip rating thanks to its textured surface. This is important in areas that get wet often, like swimming pools or uncovered pathways exposed to rain. Our other microcement finishes are still suitable for floors — it’s up to each installer to make recommendations based on the individual project.

Other benefits include:

  • Unlike concrete, microcement pavements are resistant to temperature changes so they won’t contract or expand in extreme cold or heat.

  • Microcement is easy to maintain externally — simply hose it down with water.

  • It’s one product that does it all, inside and out. Achieve seamless visual harmony with one floor, wall, or ceiling coating that seamlessly flows from indoor to outdoor spaces.

Suitable applications:

  • Outdoor flooring

  • Facades

  • Curved walls and columns

  • Outdoor staircases

  • Swimming pools

  • Garden pathways

  • Balconies

  • Decks and porches

  • Flat rooftops

Recommended materials:

X-Bond Micro (external walls)

X-Bond Micro delivers a smooth concrete-inspired surface. It features subtle variations in texture and colour thanks to its hand-trowelled application — our most seamless microcement finish.

X-Bond Mineral (external feature walls and ramps)

Perfect for feature walls, X-Bond Mineral has a rough stucco surface inspired by salt formations and mineral caves. This highly textural finish is also the most suitable choice for non-slip flooring and outdoor ramps.

X-Bond Blade (external floors)

For X-Bond Blade, the microcement is applied with a blade to create raised chatter marks for a higher slip rating, making X-Bond Blade the best choice for outdoor flooring that’s exposed often to water.

X-Bond Natural Concrete (external feature walls)

Defined by a contrast of raised and indented areas, X-Bond Natural Concrete is our raw, organic finish. After being sprayed onto the wall, the microcement is smoothed out in certain places using a hand trowel.

External microcement maintenance and care tips

Microcement offers the advantage of minimal maintenance, with its high resistance to wear and tear. When it does need to be cleaned, it’s very easy.

To maintain your microcement’s condition, simply wash it periodically with water and a mild detergent, particularly in high-traffic areas or when dirt accumulates. Avoid harsh cleaning agents containing strong or abrasive ingredients, opting instead for common household, commercial, or industrial detergents.

Other tips for looking after microcement outdoors include:

  • Do not wash the X-Bond surface for the first week after application, not even with water. This allows sealers to dry completely.

  • In external areas simply hose down or use low- or high-pressure washing equipment.

  • While abrasions don’t happen often, take care when moving outdoor furniture to prevent scratches.

  • Clean up all spills and semi-solids as soon as possible. Some liquids (for example citrus, urine, oil) can stain your surface and need to be removed as quickly as possible.

  • Sand, grit and other debris can be abrasive to the surface if carried on shoes, so clean your microcement floor regularly.
